Golden Boy

Starred Review from School Library Journal – Golden Boy

Gr 6 Up–Though she’s only a sophomore in high school, Emma Branch is a science prodigy—but even she could not have predicted that a class project involving the genetic modification of fruit flies would so profoundly transform her best friend, family, and town. Emma has few friends; unlike the rest of the town, she prefers studying to football, and since her mother’s death, she has taken on the role of caretaker at home. Her closest companion is Hudson, the golden retriever her mother left behind to keep her company. When Hudson becomes critically ill, Emma uses her experimental serum in a desperate attempt to save him. Hudson’s transformation into a human known as “Bud Golden” proves to be a miracle not only for Emma but also for her high school football coach father and his struggling team. The premise may be far-fetched, but the characters are well-rounded and believable. Emma is a compelling protagonist through whom the author explores bullying, family tension, honesty, friendship, and a touch of romance, all within an authentic high school environment. As Bud, Hudson remains delightfully naïve, energetic, and unmistakably canine, offering a fresh and humorous perspective that reminds those around him of the importance of play, teamwork, and staying true to oneself. Main characters cue white.
VERDICT Like a golden retriever, this fun, fast-moving football story featuring an outstanding female lead will appeal to a wide range of readers.
